Accommodation Review
We arrived to a very warm and friendly welcome at Grootboos Private Nature Reserve and were shown to our suite.
The lodge has panoramic view across beautiful Walker Bay, which is a protected site, accessed by permit only.
The suites are beautifully decorated and the food is absolutely fantastic.
Of all the lovely places we have stayed on this trip so far, this is definitely one of the best.
The vegetable garden and farm that supplies the fantastic food they serve at Grootbos was really interesting. They offer 8 local women the chance to work in the farm for a year, training them in useful skills which equips them to get jobs. Finding employment is even harder for women than for men here. There are free range chickens, honey bees, orchards and greenhouses here where all the fresh vegetables are grown.
There are pigs here. Their living accommodation is better than some of the people have to put up with – sadly – that is no joke.
Grootboos keep in touch with all their former employees – I really like the philanthropic approach they have.

Tips for Future Travellers
They are doing a wonderful job here conserving unique vegetation made possible by the four soil types they have – six flower species are only found in Grootbos. So many of the flowers have medicinal value as well as great beauty. Most of the proteas had finished flowering, unfortunately – they are at their best in October – so you might want to time your visit accordingly.
