Hotel la Residence La Luna Nel Porto - Stresa
Hotel Reidence la Luna Nel Porto is a stylish lakefront hotel. Our room (106) had a lovely view of Lake Maggiore and cheerful citrus lemon yellow decor – very Italian.
It also had a little kitchenette – useful for making your own breakfast and preparing aperitifs. There is a handy Carrefour supermarket just around the corner in town.
It has no restaurant, but finding one in touristy Stresa is extremely easy! The Italian breakfast is a sumptuous affair: Eggs cooked just the way you like them, scalding hot coffee, the freshest of fresh fruit (including juicy plums and apricots) and an array of other tempting morsels. You won’t need any lunch!
There are also pair of ather elegant wooden sun loungers on the bedroom terrace, overlooking the lake.
The only downside really is the lack of parking – often a problem in the Italian Lakes. There are a few parking spaces on the road alongside the hotel, but none were free when we arrived – or later in the day. You can park – for free – in the market square 5 minutes walk away, but not on Fridays (market day!).
Hotel Cannero - Cannero
Location, Location, Location
Hotel Cannero has an enviable location just a few metres from the water. The terrace, restaurant and most of the bedrooms overlook the lake. Once a monastery and then a nobleman’s house, it has many elegant features which have been sympathetically preserved and a collection of handsome period furniture. To stay here is like stepping back into a bygone age.
The charming little café-bar Caffè alle Vele (complete with a piano) and the sunny outdoor swimming pool add to the pleasure of staying here.
The waterfront I Castelli restaurant has a varied menu offerings choice of typical locally sourced Italian specialties (including some excellent pasta dishes) and international fare. The pretty glass chandeliers and fresh roses on every table make this a special place to dine. A good choice of Piedmont and Lombardy wines are available and you can visit the wine tasting room to sample what’s on offer before you choose the wine for your table if you like. The buffet breakfast is equally delicious with tempting home made torte and jams available.
Best of all, the hotel has its own garage area at the back of the hotel. Accessed only by the pedestrian road running along the lakefront (you need a pass from the hotel to drive down it), you can park the car safely and relax and enjoy your stay without any of the hassle often associated with lakeside hotels. Be prepared though – you might have to ask the occasional person to pull their chair in a bit as you progress down the little cobbled road though!
